This is especially true in professions like writing - it takes about the same amount of effort to write just about every novel, but only a tiny handful of them ever touch something in the zeitgeist and go on to become best-sellers.

Still, that being said, you're right in that from a game theory perspective a lottery like the Powerball is only worth playing when they payoff is greater than the odds of a win. At 100 million to one against, and since the "cash option" only returns a little over half the posted amount, it's quite rare for that to occur. Statistically, you're almost always better off saving your money.Scott Stenwickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12389664381513219613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5431148274591271115.post-21291383202943426142013-02-10T23:27:47.196-07:002013-02-10T23:27:47.196-07:00I noticed, some blogs that participated on the UBC...I noticed, some blogs that participated on the UBC were hard to comment on.

Too many hoops to jump through, just to share an opinion.

I didn't really care for some of the story blogs either, but I made it a point to post if they were above me on the comment list.

I hate knowing that some people walking away without a single comment to show for the effort they made to post.

Hopefully, you won't let this experience deter you from sharing a part of yourself during the next UBC.

Hope to see you there! :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15646247120767244643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5431148274591271115.post-50801527547824710802013-01-24T19:03:00.838-07:002013-01-24T19:03:00.838-07:00That makes sense. @Tsa...Love #23 and #24. Was laughing my arse off.

@TsarAndrew -- Oh that is one of my pet peeves, too! So many people think they're writers by the mere virtue that they want to write or like the idea of writing. Who else does that? I've never met a plumber who says they're a plumber simply because they plan on doing some plumbing some day. Or even a painter who calls themselves a painter by virtue that they may some day paint something. This is only something people say about writing. Everyone thinks they're a writer just by saying they are. After all, they've got ideas. (Yeah, who doesn't?)S. J. Reisner || Audrey Brice || S. They are 1) Underage (something that I would never consider writing), 2) Bestiality, 3) Incest, and 4) Rape for Titillation. Ok, these all sound pretty disgusting, but Paypal went extreme with their rules. For instance, werewolves could only have sex if both of them were in human form (and only human form was allowed--no wolf on wolf sex was allowed to be mentioned); you could not write about Isis and Osiris having sex in an erotica story (because those two Egyptian deitities were brother and sister); and bondage between consenting adults was considered rape for titilation. By the way, Paypal was only going to enforce these rules among erotica writers--romance and other genres were allowed to keep them all, and only among indie writers were Paypal throwing their weight around. So you can end up writing something that you do not think is a problem at all, and still have it be one of the Forbidden Four. And I was writing an Isis/Osiris story at the time that Paypal started foaming at the mouth...a story has not been finished because I lost the muse to finish it while waiting for Paypal to quit complaining (which they eventually did).Morgan Drake Ecksteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09258538066497554895noreply@blogger.com
